Dr. John Zabriskie

Co-Founder, Senior Partner Emeritus

Dr. John Zabriskie Jr. died peacefully on March 13, 2014, after a short lived battle with throat cancer.

Dr. John Zabriskie was a builder and visionary who was uniquely able to ground big ideas with practical skepticism. He was a vibrant force of nature with a big smile, booming laugh and warm heart. He did not suffer fools though and could also be a tough critic and stern taskmaster. John was Co-founder, Chairman and General Partner at PureTech. He joined us when PureTech was just an idea in a basement. PureTech would not have been possible without him and he will remain alive in everything we do. We are so grateful to him and will miss him terribly.

Prior to joining the founding team at PureTech, Dr. Zabriskie was Chairman of the Board, CEO and President of NEN Life Science Products, Inc., a leading supplier of kits for labeling and detection of DNA. At NEN, Dr. Zabriskie led the successful turnaround and sale of the company in a transaction that generated a 20x return for investors. Prior to joining NEN, Dr. Zabriskie was President and CEO of Pharmacia and Upjohn, Inc., a Fortune 500 pharmaceutical company formed by the merger of Pharmacia AB of Sweden and the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, Michigan. As Chairman of the Board and CEO of the Upjohn Company, Dr. Zabriskie led the Upjohn project, which resulted in the $12 billion merger of equals. Prior to joining Upjohn in 1994, Dr. Zabriskie spent 27 years at Merck where he began as a chemist and held various positions including President of Manufacturing, President of Merck Frosst, President of Merck , Sharp & Dohme and Executive Vice President of Merck and Co., Inc. Dr. Zabriskie was a member of the US Healthcare Leadership Council, and served on a number of boards including the Kellogg Co., Array BioPharma, and ARCA Discovery. Dr. Zabriskie is a native of Aurora, NY and received his AB in chemistry from Dartmouth College and his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Rochester.

John was a descendent of Albrecht Zabriskie who settled in New Amsterdam circa 1660. He leaves behind his beloved wife Adelaide, his four children, six grandchildren and a world full of people he helped and influenced.
